HET LOT is een avontuurlijke, humorvolle roman over de weerloze mens op aarde. Drie koppige mannen proberen uit alle macht baas te blijven over hun leven en veroorzaken een chaos die op de lachspieren werkt - en die venijnig ontroert. Leidraad van het burleske verhaal is de voorspelling van een ramp.
Ernesto Paz, burgemeester van `Het Paradijs' - een afgelegen oerwouddorp - wordt getart door visioenen. Een vuurzee en keverplaag zullen de hongerdood brengen. Om de voorspelling af te wenden gaat hij regeren per decreet. Wat de maniakale bestuurder niet weet is dat een handvol vluchtelingen door het regenwoud trekt om in zijn Paradijs een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Hun komst heeft een wonderlijk effect. HET LOT laat zich lezen als een parabel, als een mythische vertelling. Wat doen wij in vredesnaam op aard?

Ernesto Paz, mayor of `Paradise' - a remote jungle village - is worn down by visions. A firestorm and beetle plague will bring starvation. To ward off the prediction he decides to rule by decree. The maniacal ruler is not aware that a handfull of refugees migrate through the rainforest to settle in his Paradise. Their arrival will have a unexpected and wondrous effect. FATE can be read as a parable, as a mythic story. What in heaven's name are we doing on earth?
Kort fragment uit 'NIEUWBOUW en SFEER'
Onze natuurlijke omgeving bestaat uit zes typen situaties. Als we deze zes situaties opnemen in een nieuwbouwproject creëren we een omgeving met natuurlijke trekjes. De nieuwbouw is de schaduw van onze evolutionaire omstandigheden. De verscheidenheid aan gebieden sluit aan bij het levensbeeld van de bewoners, en biedt een podium voor divers gedrag.
Dit soort nieuwbouw is niet spectaculair maar `ongedwongen'. Door de diversiteit voelen we ons ongemerkt thuis. We zien samenwerking (Dialoog), maar er wordt ook geruzied (Strijd). Hier en daar zijn eigenzinnige, afgeschermde ruimten (Autonomie), er is dramatische gelatenheid (Lot) en ook het verstilde hoogstaande (God) krijgt een plekje.
Het ontwerp is dus een constructie van zes verschillende werelden.

The structure of the human habitat
Our natural environment consists of six types of situations. If we include these situations in a new urban project, we shall create an environment with natural traits. The urban design is the shadow of our primal circumstances. The miscellany of areas corresponds with the mental map of the residents, and offers a platform for varied behaviour.
This kind of urban design is not spectacular but is `relaxed'. The diversity enables us to feel at home without realizing it. We see co-operation (Dialogue) but there are also arguments (Combat). There are small screened-off spaces here and there (Autonomy), there is dramatic resignation (Destiny) and the moment of serenity (Divinity) has also been allocated a niche.
